1. Product Description

RXSOL Detergent Thickener Liquid is a specially formulated viscosity-enhancing additive developed for liquid dishwashing detergents, hand wash liquids, multipurpose cleaners and other surfactant-based cleaning products.

The product is designed to improve viscosity, consistency and formulation stability without significantly affecting cleaning performance when used at appropriate concentrations.

RXSOL Detergent Thickener helps manufacturers achieve a smooth, uniform and commercially attractive liquid detergent consistency while maintaining desirable foam characteristics.

It is particularly suitable for formulations containing SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), AOS (Alpha Olefin Sulfonate), CAPB (Cocamidopropyl Betaine) and compatible non-ionic surfactants.

The product can reduce reliance on sodium chloride thickening in suitable detergent systems and offers improved formulation flexibility.

RXSOL Manufacturing Formulation

Liquid Detergent & Dishwash Thickener – 100 KG Batch

This proposed formulation is a surfactant-based viscosity booster intended for use in compatible anionic detergent formulations.

Formulation A – General Purpose Liquid Thickener Concentrate

Estimated surfactant active matter: Approximately 28.5%, assuming 100% active CDEA, 30% active CAPB and 30% active lauramine oxide.

Function of Each Ingredient

1. Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB)

• Amphoteric surfactant.

• Supports viscosity development in anionic surfactant systems.

• Helps improve foam stability.

• Contributes to detergent formulation compatibility.

2. Cocamide DEA (CDEA)

• Non-ionic foam booster and viscosity enhancer.

• Improves product body and foam stability.

• Particularly effective in selected SLES-based detergent systems.

CDEA use requires review of applicable regulatory restrictions, impurity limits and nitrosamine-related controls. For new consumer formulations, a CDEA-free alternative may be preferable.

3. Lauramine Oxide

4. Propylene Glycol

Manufacturing Procedure – 100 KG

1. Charge approximately 20 kg of demineralized water into a clean stainless steel mixing vessel.

2. Start slow to moderate agitation.

3. Add sodium citrate and mix until dissolved.

4. Add propylene glycol and continue mixing.

5. Slowly add CAPB 30% while avoiding excessive foam generation.

6. Add lauramine oxide gradually.

7. Add Cocamide DEA slowly. If necessary, use mild heating according to the raw material supplier's processing instructions.

8. Add the remaining demineralized water to reach 100 kg total batch weight.

9. Mix until homogeneous.

10. Allow entrained air to dissipate.

11. Test appearance, pH, viscosity, specific gravity and stability.

12. Filter if appropriate and transfer to clean packaging.

Recommended Processing Temperature: Approximately 25–40°C.

Avoid unnecessary high shear and prolonged heating.

Precautions

Alternative Formulation B – CDEA-Free Thickener

For manufacturers wishing to avoid Cocamide DEA, the following formulation may be evaluated.

PEG-150 Distearate is a non-ionic associative thickener commonly used in surfactant systems. However, it may require heating and controlled processing to dissolve properly.

Manufacturing note: PEG-150 Distearate may need processing around 65–75°C depending on grade and supplier recommendations. Confirm ingredient stability and the required addition sequence before manufacturing. This alternative has not been validated as a stable, pourable concentrate.

Example: Using RXSOL Thickener in Dishwashing Liquid

For a 100 kg trial batch of dishwashing liquid:

Target pH: Approximately 6.5–8.0 Target Viscosity: 2,000–5,000 mPa·s at 25°C, measured using a defined Brookfield spindle and speed.

These are development targets and must be confirmed experimentally.

Important: Salt Thickening Curve

When sodium chloride is used in a surfactant-based detergent, viscosity normally increases up to an optimum salt concentration and may then decrease if additional salt is added.

Therefore, sodium chloride should be added gradually, preferably as a premade solution, while checking viscosity after equilibration.

The correct thickener dosage and salt concentration should be determined together.

One important commercial distinction: the formulations above are surfactant-based viscosity boosters, not universal thickeners. Their performance depends strongly on the final detergent's surfactant system.

If your intended product is a concentrated liquid thickener that customers add at only 0.5–1% to increase dishwash viscosity substantially, a different formulation strategy using an optimized associative polymer or specialized rheology modifier may be more appropriate.
