MAGNESIUM PERCHLORATE
Magnesium perchlorate is a powerful oxidizing agent, with the formula Mg(ClO4)2. The salt is also a superior drying agent for gas analysis. Magnesium perchlorate decomposes at 250 °C. The heat of formation is -568.90 kJ mol−1 Magnesium perchlorate is produced by the reaction of magnesium hydroxide and perchloric acid.
Anhydrous magnesium perchlorate (anhydrone) is a well known powerful desiccant. Another potential application of magnesium perchlorate is its use as electrolyte in high energy density batteries [3-5] and Mg/MnO 2 batteries.
Magnesium perchlorate hexahydrate is a highly hygroscopic metal hydrate that can be dehydrated to prepare anhydrous magnesium perchlorate. It can be used as an electrophilic catalyst for non-enzymic reduction of synthetic dihydropyridines. It may also be used in the formation of magnesium ion batteries.
