MERCURIC IODIDE RED LR is used for preparation of Nessler's reagent, used for detection of presence of ammonia. Mercury(II) iodide is a semiconductor material, used in some x-ray and gamma ray detection and imaging devices operating at room temperatures.
Note
Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, potassium, sodium, interhalogens. It is light-sensitive.
As an analytical reagent for the preparation of Nessler's Reagent. It is also used as an oxidizing agent for the synthesis of quinoxaline. Polycrystalline films of mercury (II) iodide, also play an important role in X-ray imaging.
