USES
- Reducing agent: Used in nonaqueous solvents to reduce aldehydes, ketones, Schiff bases, acids, esters, acid chlorides, disulfides, nitriles, and inorganic anions. For example, it can be used to synthesize cobalt (II, III) oxide from cobalt chloride, reduce aldehydes and ketones to alcohols, and reduce aromatic nitro compounds to aromatic amines.
- Bleaching agent: Used to bleach wood pulp and textiles. In textiles, it can produce soft, durable, and brightly colored fabrics.
- Blowing agent: Used in plastics.
- Wastewater treatment: Used to transform heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury into less harmful forms.
- Paper production: Used to remove lignin, a complex organic polymer in wood, to improve the strength, texture, and color of paper.
- Gold and platinum recycling: Used in the recycling of gold and platinum group metals.
- Gold nanoparticles: Used in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles, which are used in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, electron microscopy, and medical research.
