Used in solid propellants, explosives, fertilizers, and for many other uses. Sodium nitrate is the inorganic nitrate salt of sodium. It has a role as a fertilizer. It is an inorganic sodium salt and an inorganic nitrate salt.
Sodium nitrate (and its cousin additive sodium nitrite) is a common preservative used in cured meat products including bacon, deli meat, and jerky. It has been linked to the development of heart disease and diabetes.
Rare cases of nitrates being converted to the more toxic nitrites have been reported, mostly with infants. Skin Contact: May cause irritation, symptoms including redness, itching, and pain.
