tert-Butyl alcohol is used as a solvent and ethanol denaturant. It is an active ingredient of paint remover. It acts as an intermediate in the production of methyl tertiary butyl ether and ethyl tertiary butyl ether by reaction with methanol and ethanol.

Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, copper, alkali metals and aluminum.
