DESCRIPTION::
Tall oil fatty acid (TOFA), a viscous, yellowish liquid, is a byproduct of the Kraft process used in wood pulp production, primarily containing fatty acids (like oleic and linoleic) and some rosin acids.
TECHNICAL SPECFICATION::
- Acid Value: 192 min (mgKOH/g).
- Color: 5 max (Gardner).
- Fatty Acids: 94 min (%).
- Unsaponifiables: 2 max (%).
- Density: 0.90 - 0.93 g/cm3.
- Flash Point: More than 190 °C.
- Titer Value: 10 - 12 °C.
- Rosin Acid: 25 - 30%.
- Iodine Value: 130 - 140.
APPLICATION::
- Fuel Additives: As a source of fatty acids for fuel additives.
- Alkyd Resins: As a component in the production of alkyd resins.
- Dimer Acids: As a precursor for dimer acids.
- Surfactants: Used in the production of surfactants.
- Cleaners: Used in the production of liquid cleaners.
- Oilfield Chemicals: As a component in oilfield chemicals.
- Lubricant Esters: Used in the production of lubricant esters.
- Other Chemical Derivatives: As a raw material for a variety of chemical derivatives.
- Rubber and Tire Processing Aids: Used in rubber and tire processing.
- PVC Stabilizers: Used in the production of PVC stabilizers.
CAUSES::
- Skin and Eye Irritation: TOFA can cause skin and eye irritation.
- Allergic Reactions: May cause allergic skin reactions.
- Inhalation: May cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled.
- Ingestion: Ingestion is likely to be harmful or have adverse effects.
- Fire Hazard: Irritating vapors and toxic gases, such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, may be formed when involved in fire.
- Environmental Hazards: While TOFA is readily biodegradable and has low bioaccumulation potential, it may be dangerous if it enters water intakes.
PRECAUTION::
- Gloves: Wear chemical-resistant gloves to protect hands and skin.
- Eye Protection: Always wear eye protection, such as chemical goggles, to prevent eye irritation.
- Clothing: Wear long-sleeved clothing and an apron to minimize skin exposure.
- Footwear: Wear sturdy footwear.
- Avoid breathing dust/fumes/mist/vapors: Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
- Use a vapor respirator: If exposure to the substance is apparent (e.g., generation of high concentrations of mist or vapor, inadequate ventilation, development of respiratory tract irritation), and engineering controls are not feasible, use a vapor respirator.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area.
- Keep container closed.
- Keep away from heat, sparks, and flames.
- Do not eat, drink, or smoke: where chemicals are handled, processed, or stored.
- Wash hands and skin: thoroughly after contact.
- If the product gets into your eyes, rinse eyes thoroughly: for at least 15 minutes with tap water and seek medical attention.
- Contain spills immediately: to prevent environmental contamination.
- Wear appropriate PPE: when handling spills.
- Absorb spilled material: with an appropriate absorbent material.
- Dispose of contaminated materials: according to local regulations.
