Heavy Duty Degreaser in Oman: Dilution Rates for Engines and Floors
TL;DR

How to dilute and apply RXSOL heavy duty degreaser on engines, workshop floors and decks, which grade to order, and how we deliver it from Barka to Muscat and the rest of Oman.

Oil, carbonised grease and soot build up on engines and workshop floors in Muscat, and a concentrated heavy duty degreaser mixed at the right strength removes them. You mix RXSOL-10-1005-020 and RXSOL-10-1005-210 at 1 part of product with 2-10 parts of water or gas oil. On heavy oil and greasy surfaces you use them directly. We are based in Barka Industrial Area, Sultanate of Oman, and we send the MSDS on request.

Why engine and floor grease needs a heavy duty degreaser

Engine blocks, gearbox casings and workshop floors collect lube oil, carbonised grease, soot and road dirt. In the Muscat heat that film bakes hard, and a general purpose detergent only spreads it around. On concrete the oil soaks into the surface and leaves a dark stain that comes back after every mop.

A heavy duty degreaser breaks the oil into a mixture you can rinse away with water. Ours is a unique formulation blended from inorganic and organic compounds and detergents with powerful dispersing agents and aliphatic petroleum distillates. It is readily soluble in water in all proportions. It is non-corrosive to metal like copper, aluminium, mild steel and plastic, which matters on engines where several metals and plastic fittings sit side by side.

The product acts quickly even at low temperature. That means you can clean equipment while it stays in service and avoid shutdown and down time.

Which RXSOL grade to order

We list four heavy duty grades. For engine rooms, ship decks and bilges, industrial floors, workshop equipment, cargo hold cleaning and oil-stained concrete and machinery, order RXSOL Degreaser Heavy Duty (RXSOL-10-1005-025). It is ideal for use where chlorinated solvents are undesirable or prohibited. For contaminated fuel oil tanks and cargo tanks, the solvent-based Tank Degreaser Heavy Duty (RXSOL-20-2029-020) is the grade to order.

The tank degreaser is a clear light brown liquid with a density in g/cm3 at 15°C of 0.99 and a flash point (PMCC) °C above 62. When mixed with water, a clear emulsion is formed. It has no known effect on metal, but rubber may swell, so keep it away from gaskets and hoses you plan to reuse.

Dilution rates for engines and floors

The procedure of use for RXSOL-10-1005-020 and RXSOL-10-1005-210 is to mix 1 part of degreaser with 2-10 parts of water or gas oil. For heavy oil and greasy surfaces, use it directly. Our product notes also say to use it undiluted for heavily soiled components.

You set the strength inside that range to suit the job. The less water you add, the stronger the mix. As a starting point to trial on your own equipment:

  • Heavily soiled engine blocks, sumps and components caked in carbonised grease: undiluted, applied directly.
  • Engine bays, gearboxes and machinery with a moderate oil film: the strong end of the range, close to 1 part degreaser to 2 parts water.
  • Oil-stained concrete and workshop floors: a stronger mix on the stains, and a weaker mix towards 1 part to 10 parts for routine floor washing.

The procedure allows water or gas oil as the diluent. Water is the usual choice for floors and decks because it rinses away cleanly. A gas oil mix is flammable, so use it only with good ventilation, away from hot surfaces, sparks and naked flames, and never on a hot engine.

How to apply it on engines and floors

You can brush the degreaser on, spray it or use it in a dip tank. It also works as a liquid steam jenny compound and as a wash for fuel tankers.

For an engine, cover electrical connectors and air intakes first. Spray the mix over the entire surface to be cleaned and brush it into the heavy deposits around the sump and manifold. Give it time to penetrate, then rinse with water. For small parts such as brackets and filter housings, soak them in a dip tank of the mix.

For a workshop or factory floor, sweep up loose dirt first. Spread the mix with a stiff broom or a scrubber, work it into the oil stains, then rinse, or pick up the dirty solution with a wet vacuum. Keep run-off out of storm drains and collect it with your oily waste in line with your site's waste rules.

One caution for floors: the product can be used as a stripper for all types of waxes and finishes. On a polished or waxed floor it will lift the finish, so test a small patch first, or use it only where you plan to recoat. Wear chemical resistant gloves and eye protection, and read the MSDS before first use.

Where it is used in Oman

In Muscat it suits vehicle and plant workshops in Ghala and Wadi Kabir, maintenance teams cleaning car park ramps and generator rooms, and ship agents supplying vessels at Port Sultan Qaboos in Mutrah. Marine users apply it in engine rooms, on ship decks and bilges, and for cargo hold cleaning. Fuel transport fleets use it as a wash for fuel tankers.

Outside the capital, the same grade is also listed for Sohar port and Liwa industrial buyers on our Sohar Chemical Degreaser Heavy Duty page. Dhofar workshops and Salalah port buyers can order it through the Salalah Chemical heavy duty degreaser page. For Duqm projects, contact us with your requirements.
