Chemical Descaling for Galley Equipment and Calorifiers in Oman
TL;DR

Scale in galley calorifiers and hot water equipment slows heating and overloads elements. We explain which RXSOL descaler to use, how to mix it, which metals to avoid, and how to order from our Barka warehouse.

Scale in a galley calorifier, a hot water boiler or a heat exchanger slows heating and overloads the elements. Our Descalex Powder (RXSOL-16-1008-010) is the descaler we supply for this job. You mix it with fresh water at 3 to 20 percent depending on deposition of scaling, and it needs no heating unless you want it to work faster. Keep it away from aluminium, zinc, tin, their alloys and galvanised surfaces. If your team prefers a liquid, our Descaling Scalefoe Compound (RXSOL-16-1008-060) does the same work by circulation or soaking. Contact us for delivery details for your site.

Why scale builds up in calorifiers and galley hot water equipment

When hard water is heated, dissolved calcium and magnesium salts come out of solution and settle as carbonate scale on the hottest surfaces. These are calorifier coils, immersion heater elements, boiler tubes and the water side of heat exchangers. The higher the temperature and the more water that passes through, the faster the layer grows.

Scale insulates the heating surface. Your calorifier takes longer to reach temperature, the element or steam coil runs hotter than it was designed to, and energy use goes up. Our product notes put it plainly: scales interfere with the heat transfer and can lead to overheating and eventually, boiler rupture. In a hotel kitchen in Muscat or a ship's galley, the first sign is usually slow hot water recovery during peak service.

Chemical descaling removes the deposit with an inhibited acid solution, so you do not have to dismantle the unit. That keeps downtime short, which a galley serving three meals a day needs.

Which RXSOL descaler suits your equipment

Descalex Powder for boilers and calorifiers is a heavy duty powder acid containing accelerators, corrosion inhibitors and wetting agents. It is listed for boilers, calorifiers, heat exchangers, diesel engine cooling systems, condensers and evaporators. The powder is water-soluble, non-flammable, non-volatile and non-hygroscopic, and it contains an anti-foam agent. A powder is safe and easy to handle and store, which helps in a ship's store room or a hotel plant room.

Descaling Scalefoe Compound is a liquid acid containing descaling accelerators, corrosion inhibitors and wetting agents, with an acidic polymer and phosphoric acid. Its product data lists it as safe on copper, copper-nickel, bronze, brass, iron, stainless steel and rubber, which covers most calorifier coils and stainless galley equipment. It has unlimited shelf life and is easy to rinse off. Our earlier Scalefoe Compound supplier article for Oman covers that product in more detail.

For general lime scale on galley appliances and machinery parts, our Descaling Liquid in 20 Ltr packs dissolves mineral deposits including lime scale. If scale is also building up in galley drain lines and evac systems, ask us about Drainex, our scale remover for sewage pipelines and evac systems.

How to use Descalex Powder and Scalefoe Compound

Before you start, isolate the calorifier or appliance, let it cool and drain the water side. Check the materials against the compatibility notes in the next section before you mix anything.

For Descalex Powder, mix it with fresh water at 3 to 20 percent depending on deposition of scaling. Use the lower end for a light film and the upper end for thick, hard scale. It requires no heating unless you need it to act faster. As with any acid descaler, drain the spent solution once the scale has gone and flush the water side thoroughly with fresh water before you return the unit to service.

For Scalefoe Compound, circulation is the most effective method for large systems or components. For small components, such as removable galley parts, use the soak method in an immersion bath. If the equipment is contaminated by oil, grease, sludge or carbonised oil, pre-clean it with Rxsol-20-2002-SC or Rxsol-10-1006-SB first. Always use it in a plastic bucket, and always add the product into the water. Never add water into the product. You do not have to heat it.

Metal compatibility and safety checks

Do not use Descalex Powder on aluminium, zinc, tin and their alloys, and keep it off galvanised surfaces. Rubber shows no known effect. Many galley appliances and older water tanks have aluminium parts or galvanised pipework, so confirm the materials with the equipment maker before you dose. For copper and copper alloys, the Scalefoe Compound data lists copper, copper-nickel, bronze, brass, iron, stainless steel and rubber as safe.

Descalex Powder has a pH of 1.1 at 10 wt %, and Scalefoe Compound has a pH below 1.5 in concentrate, so treat both as strong acids. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection, ventilate enclosed spaces, and keep fresh water close by for splashes. Descalex is a non-combustible solid. Smoke from fires is irritating, and run off water should be prevented from entering drains if possible. We send the MSDS on request so your HSE team can check it against your site rules and local requirements for discharging spent solution.

Where galley and calorifier descaling is done in Oman

In Muscat, typical users are hotel engineering teams in Qurum and Al Khuwair, hospital and catering kitchens, and facility managers who run hot water plant in office buildings in Ruwi. Ship agents order descaler for crew galleys on vessels calling at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muttrah.

Outside the capital, camp kitchens around Duqm and plant canteens in Sohar run large calorifiers that scale quickly. Descalex Powder is also listed on our Sohar site, and on our Salalah site, so you can order through the site closest to you.
