BUT it can be a CHOKING HAZARD on ingestion, therefore "DO NOT EAT" captions are placed on the pouches. Silica gel, having molecular formula (SO2) is amorphous and porous.
Silica gel is a porous form of silicon dioxide that is present in the form of small beads. It has the property to adsorb 40% more than its own weight. Silica Gel, therefore, is a desiccant, which means it has the power to adsorb moisture by attracting water molecules. These beads are packed in paper packets and put into the items that need to be kept dry and moisture-free. Silica gel molecularly adsorbs the water molecules which get stuck on its porous surface.
Silica Gel can be used as an air freshener as it adsorbs the odor and thus is used for banishing it. It can also be used for preventing stale drawers. These silica gel paper bags are kept in all the places required to keep the dry thing in their dry state, to prevent odor and prevent moisture. Silica Gel is mistaken to absorb moisture but on the molecular level the silica molecule carries out the process of ADSORPTION rather than ABSORPTION. (In Absorption the liquid is carried out to the bulk of the solid whereas in Adsorption the liquid sticks onto the surface pores of the solid.) Silica gel is a desiccant. Therefore it prevents the growth of bread mould and other organisms on things we don't require them at. It is also used in SATELLITES and RADIOS to keep up the relative humidity thus, helping in the proper transmission of signals. Therefore SILICA GEL is used in almost all places where it is required to absorb moisture.
