Ethyl acetate (systematically ethyl ethanoate, commonly abbreviated EtOAc, ETAC or EA) is the organic compound with the formula CH3−COO−CH2−CH3, simplified to C4H8O2. This colorless liquid has a characteristic sweet smell (similar to pear drops) and is used in glues, nail polish removers, and in the decaffeination process of tea and coffee. Ethyl acetate is the ester of ethanol and acetic acid; it is manufactured on a large scale for use as a solvent.

Ethyl acetate is used primarily as a solvent and diluent, being favored because of its low cost, low toxicity, and agreeable odor. For example, it is commonly used to clean circuit boards and in some nail varnish removers (acetone is also used). Coffee beans and tea leaves are decaffeinated with this solvent (when supercritical CO2 extraction is not possible).

It is also used in paints as an activator or hardener. Ethyl acetate is present in confectionery, perfumes, and fruits. In perfumes, it evaporates quickly, leaving only the scent of the perfume on the skin.[citation needed]

Laboratory uses

In the laboratory, mixtures containing ethyl acetate are commonly used in column chromatography and extractions. Ethyl acetate is rarely selected as a reaction solvent because it is prone to hydrolysis, transesterification, and condensations.

Occurrence in wines

Ethyl acetate is the most common ester in wine, being the product of the most common volatile organic acid – acetic acid, and the ethyl alcohol generated during the fermentation. The aroma of ethyl acetate is most vivid in younger wines and contributes towards the general perception of “fruitiness” in the wine. Sensitivity varies, with most people having a perception threshold around 120 mg/L. Excessive amounts of ethyl acetate are considered a wine fault.

Usage

Acetate is a non-polar to weak polar aprotic solvent which have some solubility portion in water. Its miscibility with water gets higher at elevated temperature. Higher acetates have a low solubility in water and used as extraction solvents for fine chemicals particularly for certain antibiotics. Organic acetates are good solvents for a broad range of resins as they are miscible with almost all common organic liquids. Due to their powerful solvency, high volatility and mild odor, acetates are widely used as solvents for paints, coatings, adhesives, cellulose, plastics, fats, wood stains. Additionally ether acetates series are also widely used as solvent.

Application :

  1. As an industrial solvent, used in coatings, adhesives, ethyl cellulose, artificial leather, linoleum colorants, artificial fibers and other products;
  2. Used as adhesive for printing ink and artificial pearl production;
  3. As an extractant, used in the production of medicine, organic acid and other products;
  4. As the raw material of spices, it is used as the main raw material of fruit flavors such as pineapple, banana, strawberry and spices such as whiskey and cream.

These industrial estates are located in key locations of Oman such as Rusayl, Salalah, Sohar, Sur, Nizwa and Buraimi.

Al Mazunah Free Zone strategically located in the south west of Oman on the Oman–Yemen border.

Knowledge Oasis Muscat is a public-private sector led Technology Park situated in a 68 hectare site situated at 32 km from Muscat.
Salalah Free Zone is located in a strategic location in Salalah with access to Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Besides access to world’s fastest growing markets, the zone also offers a whole host of other business advantages.
