Sodium oxide is a chemical compound with the formula Na2O. It is used in ceramics and glasses. The compound is the base anhydride of sodium hydroxide; when water is added to sodium oxide, NaOH is produced.
Applications
Sodium oxide is a component of most glass, although it is added in the form of “soda” (sodium carbonate). Typically, manufactured glass contains around 15% sodium oxide, 70% silica (silicon dioxide) and 9% lime (calcium oxide). The sodium carbonate “soda” serves as a flux to lower the temperature at which the silica mixture melts. Soda glass has a much lower melting temperature than pure silica and has slightly higher elasticity. These changes arise because the silicon dioxide and soda have reacted to form sodium silicates of the general formula Na2[SiO2]x[SiO3].
Sodium Oxide stays insoluble in water or other aqueous solutions. This makes it extremely stable for making ceramic structures, clay bowls, lightweight structural components in the industry of aerospace, and advanced electronics. It is also used for making fuel cells due to the properties of ionic conductivity. The compounds are basic anhydrides, and therefore, react well with acids. Sodium Oxides are available in pieces, pellets, tablets, spluttering targets, and nanopowder.
Uses of Sodium Oxide – Na2O
It is an active flux and is used to create glazes that give exciting color responses. The more notable responses are blue from copper oxide and purple from cobalt and manganese oxides.
Used in bodies except where it has been introduced primarily as a deflocculant for casting slips.
Sodium oxide is also used in the manufacture of commercial glasses based on the oxides of silicon and certain additives.
