Benzoic acid is a colorless crystalline solid and a simple aromatic carboxylic acid. The name is derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time its only known source. Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many plants and serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites. Salts of benzoic acid are used as food preservatives and benzoic acid is an important precursor for the industrial synthesis of many other organic substances.
Benzoic acid is a mono-functional, romatic acid, which is widely used as a building block for the synthesis of alkyd resins. It is also used as a preservative in many industrial applications, such as antimicrobial agent of latex, toothpaste, jam, dyeing and printing mordant, pharmaceutical and dye intermediates for preparing plasticizer, spices and the like, rust inhibitor of steel equipment and so on.

As the principal component of gum benzoin, benzoic acid is also a major ingredient in both tinctures of benzoin and Friar’s balsam.
Benzoyl chloride
Benzoic acid is a precursor to benzoyl chloride, C6H5C(O)Cl by treatment with thionyl chloride, phosgene, or one of the chlorides of phosphorus. Benzoyl chloride is an important starting material for several benzoic acid derivates like benzyl benzoate, which is used in artificial flavors and insect repellents.
Precursor to plasticizers
Benzoate plasticizers, such as the glycol-, diethylene glycol-, and tri ethylene glycol esters, are obtained by transesterification of methyl benzoate with the corresponding diol. Alternatively, these species arise by treatment of benzoyl chloride with the diol. These plasticizers are used similarly to those derived from a terephthalic acid ester.
Benzoic acid use

[3] Mainly used as a food preservative,1g/kg used in soy sauce, vinegar, fruit juice, jam, fruit syrup, can; 0.8g/kg used in grape wine, fruit wine and soft agarose; 0.4g/kg used in fruit soda water; 0.5g/kg used in low-salt paste, flour paste, candied fruit, haw jelly cake and fruit syrup; 2g/kg used in condensed fruit juice.

3.Modifying agent for polyamide resin and alkyd resins.
4.Rust inhibitor of steel equipment and so on.
Benzoic acid and sodium benzoate have the effect of sterilizing and inhibiting the growth of bacteria, and are low in toxicity and tasteless, so they are widely used as preservatives. In slightly acidic media, only 0.1% concentration of benzoic acid can inhibit bacterial growth. Changing the pH value has a great influence on the bactericidal and antibacterial effects of benzoate, and its effect is significantly reduced in a reduced medium, and the effect is best when the pH value is between 2.5 and 4.5 .
In the food industry, benzoic acid and sodium benzoate can be used as preservatives for soy sauce, kimchi, cider, fruit juice, and feed. In medicine, cosmetics, toothpaste, powder, tobacco, etc., benzene acid and sodium benzoate are also used as preservatives. Sodium benzoate has a greater solubility in water and is usually used more, but its pH value is higher, and its bactericidal and antibacterial ability is much weaker than that of benzoic acid.
