Benzoic acid is a white (or colorless) solid with the formula C6H5CO2H. It is the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid. The name is derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time its only source. Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many plants and serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites. Salts of benzoic acid are used as food preservatives. Benzoic acid is an important precursor for the industrial synthesis of many other organic substances. The salts and esters of benzoic acid are known as benzoates.
Benzoic acid is a mono-functional, romatic acid, which is widely used as a building block for the synthesis of alkyd resins. It is also used as a preservative in many industrial applications, such as antimicrobial agent of latex, toothpaste, jam, dyeing and printing mordant, pharmaceutical and dye intermediates for preparing plasticizer, spices and the like, rust inhibitor of steel equipment and so on.

Application
Medical use:
It can be used to prepare benzoic acid salicylic acid ointment.
Preservative: It can be used as a preservative for food, feed, latex, and toothpaste. Also, It can be used together with p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters in soy sauces and refreshing beverages to increase efficiency.
Decorating agent:
It can be used as a fixative for juice drinks. It can be used as a cream to add aromatherapy essence. It can also be used in food flavors such as chocolate, lemon, orange, berry, nut, candied fruit. It is also commonly used in tobacco flavors.
Chemical intermediate:
It can be used as an intermediate in the production of benzoic acid esters and phthalic acid esters, and benzoic acid esters and phthalic acid esters are important plasticizers.
Lubricant:
Sodium benzoate can be used as a lubricant in metal processing and pharmaceutical production.
Coating additives:
The introduction of benzoic acid into the alkyd resin allows the paint film to dry quickly, but is not as solvent resistant as styrene.
Daily use:
It reacts with diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and dipropylene glycol respectively to form important common resin plasticizers such as diethylene glycol dibenzoate (DEDB), triethylene glycol dibenzoate (TEDB) and Propylene glycol dibenzoate (DPGDB), widely used in the production of resins, coatings and adhesives.
