White Silica Gel or Blue Indicating Gel: What You Are Buying
Silica gel is a granular, glassy, porous form of silicon dioxide made synthetically from sodium silicate. Desiccant gel is usually the fine-pore type, with an average pore size of typically around 2.4 nm. Water vapour collects on the inside of those pores, so the beads stay dry to the touch and do not turn liquid even when they are full.
White silica gel is the non-indicating grade. It is purified silicon dioxide in beaded or granular form, with no smell or taste. It is non-toxic, non-corrosive and chemically inert. It contains no cobalt chloride, so it does not change colour as it fills.
Blue indicating gel contains cobalt chloride. It is blue when dry and turns pink at about 8% water uptake, which helps where you need to see at a glance when to change it, for example in a compressed air dryer. Cobalt-chloride indicating grades are classified as hazardous.
For medicine boxes, pharmacy stock and packs that sit near food, choose white. Our white gel is harmless, and the packets can be used with food containers and pharmaceutical tablets. Cobalt-free white grades are also free of DMF, in line with EU non-toxicity rules such as Regulation (EU) No 412/2012.
1 Kg Bag or 2 Gram Sachets: How Much Silica Gel You Need
The usual rule of thumb is about 5 g of silica gel per cubic foot (about 28 L) of sealed air space in barrier bags or foil pouches. Unsealed cartons need more. Packing the goods in two polythene bags, or in one heavier bag, cuts the amount you need.
By that rule, one 2 g sachet covers roughly 11 litres of sealed space. That is enough for a medicine box, a phone or camera box, a small electronics carton or a pair of shoes in a sealed bag. Pharmaceutical desiccant sachets are made in sizes from about 0.5 g to over 1 kg, so for a bigger pack use several sachets or a larger pouch.
Buy the 1 kg bag if you fill your own pouches, refill tool boxes and camera cabinets, or protect leather goods, dates and spice packs in store. White silica gel also works as a dehumidifying and dehydrating agent for air conditioning and for drying compressed air and other gases. It also dries liquids such as refrigerants and oils containing water in suspension.
Sachets up to about 100 g suit single cartons on short to medium transits. For pallets and 20 ft or 40 ft containers, shippers usually use calcium chloride container desiccants, which absorb about 250% of their own weight, and keep silica gel sachets inside the cartons. Common bead sizes run from 1-3 mm to 4-8 mm, and 2-5 mm is a common standard size for white beads. Ask us which bead size is supplied when you request the quote.
Silica Gel in Oman's Humidity: Summer, Coast and Khareef
Silica gel takes up more water as the air gets more humid. At 23 °C, white beaded gel typically adsorbs about 12% of its weight at 20% RH, about 20% at 40% RH and about 36% at 90% RH. It works best at 20 to 30 °C and 60 to 90% RH, and stays usable up to about 65 °C.
In Muscat and Sohar the summer air on the coast is humid, so an open sachet fills quickly. Put the sachet inside the sealed bag with the goods and close the bag at once. Keep your stock of sachets sealed until the moment you pack.
In Salalah the air stays damp for weeks during the khareef, so size on the generous side and use heavier barrier bags. A container standing in the sun at Sohar port or Salalah port heats up inside. Keep packed cartons out of direct sun, and give the container's air space its own container desiccant.

Storing, Reactivating and Handling Silica Gel Safely
Reseal a 1 kg bag as soon as you open it. For longer storage, move the gel into a sealed airtight container such as an HDPE bottle or a heat-sealed bag, so it does not take up moisture before use.
White gel does not change colour, so check a sachet by weight: a used sachet weighs more than a fresh one from the same pack. If you want a visual check, put one blue indicating sachet in the same store as a marker, away from food and medicine.
To reactivate used gel, dry it in a controlled oven. Blue indicating gel should not go above about 120 °C (100 to 120 °C typical). Fine-pore gel should not go above 200 °C. After regeneration, water content is usually below 2%. Let the gel cool in a closed container so it does not pick up moisture from the room.
Synthetic amorphous silica (CAS 7631-86-9 / 112926-00-8) is generally not classified as hazardous under GHS and is different from crystalline silica (quartz). Dust may irritate the eyes and lungs, so avoid making dust and do not swallow it. Keep sachets out of reach of children, as the beads are a choking hazard. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 2 gram silica gel sachet enough for my product?
At about 5 g per cubic foot (about 28 L) of sealed air space, one 2 g sachet covers roughly 11 litres, which suits a medicine box or a small electronics carton. For a larger or unsealed carton, use several sachets or fill a bigger pouch from a 1 kg bag.
Is white silica gel safe for food or medicine packs, and is it toxic if swallowed?
White silica gel is non-toxic, chemically inert and free of cobalt chloride, so it is the grade used with pharmaceutical tablets and food containers. It is not food, though: do not swallow it, and keep sachets away from children. Blue indicating gel is classified as hazardous, so keep it out of food and medicine packs.
Is silica gel enough for a 20 ft or 40 ft shipping container?
Silica gel sachets protect the goods inside each carton. For the air space of a 20 ft or 40 ft container, shippers usually add calcium chloride container desiccants, which absorb about 250% of their own weight.
How long does silica gel last once the bag is open?
Open gel starts taking up moisture from the room straight away, and in humid Muscat or Salalah air it fills faster. Reseal the bag after each use, or move the gel into an airtight HDPE bottle. Used gel can be dried in a controlled oven and used again.
