TL;DR

How to choose and use a heavy duty carbon remover during a marine diesel engine overhaul, from stripping and soaking to rinsing, oiling and safe disposal, with supply from Barka to Muscat and the Oman ports.

Hard carbon on pistons, rings and injectors slows down a marine engine overhaul, and a solvent based carbon remover in a steel immersion bath is the quickest way to soften it before the parts are reassembled. The carbon remover marine engineers use in Muscat workshops is a heavy duty solvent emulsifier. You soak the parts, the deposits loosen, and a water jet washes them off. For heavy fuel oil carbon on ship, tug or generator engines we recommend our Carbon Remover Cleaner HD, used neat in a steel bath. The standard grade covers lighter work.

What a marine carbon remover does

Combustion leaves carbon, resins and varnish baked onto metal. A marine carbon remover is typically a solvent emulsifier that breaks down these residues and separates them from the surface, so light and medium layers come off without hard scraping. Solvent emulsifier types are normally used undiluted for soaking.

Our heavy duty grades use a two-layer action. The top layer stops the volatile components in the bottom layer from evaporating, and the bottom layer does the cleaning by binding and trapping the deposits as they come away. Keep a lid on the tank as well and the bath stays effective for longer.

Parts typically cleaned with this class of product include burner tips, fuel injectors, pistons, piston rings, valve cages, valve springs, connecting rods, lube and fuel oil filters, and the oil side of fuel heaters and oil coolers. It is also used on heavy fuel heaters and refinery heat exchange units. Our customers also use it on blocks, gear boxes, atomizers, pipes and cylinders.

Carbon remover marine grades: HD, standard and alternatives

Pick the grade to match the deposit and the part.

  • Carbon Remover Cleaner HD (RXSOL-16-1003-020): a heavy duty solvent based cleaner used undiluted for stubborn carbon deposits, residual combustion products, grease, oil and varnish on diesel engines. Choose this for heavily oxidised heavy fuel oil carbon on main and auxiliary engine parts.
  • Carbon Remover (RXSOL-16-1003-025): a solvent based heavy-duty carbon cleaner with a wetting emulsifying agent, which makes it water soluble. It contains Sodium Tolyltriazole (CAS 64665-57-2), a corrosion inhibitor for metals such as copper, zinc and nickel. It suits fuel heaters, oil baths, gear boxes, pistons, rings, valves and burners, and you can dilute it with water for lighter soiling.
  • Carbon Remover LT (RXSOL-16-1075-025): a non-corrosive solvent for carbon deposits that contains no chlorinated solvents or phenolic compounds. Ask for this grade if your workshop avoids chlorinated products. It is water insoluble.
  • Decarbonizer Predator (RXSOL-16-1699-025): a fast-acting liquid degreaser and decarbonizer, also water insoluble.

Water based carbon removers are the other main family. They are typically free of chlorinated hydrocarbons, phenols and chromates, and are used as supplied at about 40 to 60 °C in agitated, ultrasonic or turbulator tanks. For galley pots, pans and vent hoods on board, we supply Carbon Remover Powder, an alkaline soak with a pH of 10-11.

For this product class, typical values are a brown or clear-brown liquid, a density of about 0.99 to 1.1 g/ml and a flash point above 61 °C. These are typical figures for the class, not measured specs for our product.

Step-by-step soak procedure for an engine overhaul

  1. Strip the part and take off O-rings, seals and hoses. Keep natural and synthetic rubber out of the bath, and test any plastics before soaking.
  2. Drain the part and wipe off loose oil, which would otherwise dilute the bath.
  3. Fill a steel bath. To remove carbon, use the product concentrated. For lighter soiling, dilute the HD grade at 1 part concentrate to 2-10 parts of water.
  4. Submerge the parts fully. Put small items such as injector nozzles and valve springs in a wire basket. Keep the lid closed.
  5. Soak for 30 min. to 1 hr for normal deposits. Heavy deposition may need 12-24 hours.
  6. Lift the parts out, brush or scrape off what is left, and wash them thoroughly with a high-pressure water jet.
  7. Dry and oil bare steel and cast iron straight away, because degreased metal rusts quickly. Do not use petrol as a cleaning solvent.
  8. Inspect the parts, then reassemble with new seals.

Our carbon remover dosage and safety guide covers dilution and application methods in more detail.

Soak time, temperature and bath life in Oman heat

Most deposits come off at room temperature. Light deposits typically clear in about 1 hour. Heavy-duty immersion baths typically need 2 to 10 hours depending on contamination, and our HD data allows 12-24 hours for heavy deposition. If you warm the bath, the typical limit is no more than 50 °C, and only in a well-ventilated area.

In summer, an unshaded yard in Muscat or Sohar can bring a bath close to that limit with no heater at all. Warm solvent gives off more vapour, and an immersion bath's flash point can fall as the bath ages. Keep the tank in the shade, keep the lid on, and do not add heat during the hot months.

You can reuse the bath as long as it still lifts carbon within the expected soak time. Once parts need much longer than they did in a fresh bath, the bath is spent and should be replaced.

Circulation cleaning of oil coolers and fuel heaters

Coolers and heaters are usually cleaned in place. First blow compressed air or steam through the system to remove residual oil. For oil-side circulation, solvent carbon removers are typically diluted with diesel oil down to about 25%, kept at 50 °C or below and circulated for about 12 hours. Then rinse with fresh water until the water runs clear. These figures are typical for the product class, so confirm the dilution for our grade with us before you start circulating.

Safety, material compatibility and disposal

Our handling instruction reads: Completely avoid contact with eyes as irritation may occur. Do not take internally. In case of contact with eyes, flush eyes immediately and copiously with clean running water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

The safety data sheet for our HD and standard grades lists 1,2-Dichlorobenzene (CAS 95-50-1) as a component. Chlorinated or aromatic carbon removers can carry hazard statements for suspected carcinogenicity (H351), drowsiness or dizziness (H336), aspiration hazard if swallowed (H304) and harm to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H412). Use the product with ventilation, chemical gloves and eye protection.

Solvent carbon removers are generally non-corrosive to common metals, but they can strip old paint and lacquer. Mask any painted surface you want to keep, and test rubber and plastic parts first. Spent bath liquid is an oily emulsion, so keep it out of drains and hand it to a licensed waste contractor.

When scraping is still needed

Chemical treatment on its own does not remove heavily adhered deposits, and it does not replace mechanical cleaning or repair. On a full teardown for severe deposits, the cylinder head is removed and the combustion chamber, pistons and valve seats are cleaned. The soak softens the carbon so that scraping takes less time and puts less force on ring grooves.

Carbon can also lock injectors in their bores. A carbon-softening product makes them easier to remove, and injectors should be cleaned inside as well as outside.
